Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami shortlisted for ICC men’s ODI cricketer of the year

Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami will be battling it out to be named as the ICC’s men’s ODI cricketer of the year after their fantastic run in 2023.

Gill, Kohli and Shami will also face competition from Daryl Mitchell, who was one of New Zealand’s stars in the 50-over format and during the World Cup last year.

Kohli and Shami were stars for India during the World Cup 2023 campaign as they finished as the highest run-getter and wicket-taker respectively as the hosts reached the final of the tournament.

Gill, Kohli and Shami’s fantastic 2023

In 2023, Gill emerged as a cricketing sensation in ODIs, showcasing his exceptional talent and consistency. The young Indian batsman played a pivotal role in India’s ODI squad, amassing an impressive 1584 runs across the format, including five centuries, which made him the only player to surpass the 1500-run mark that year.

His highest score was a monumental 208, contributing to an outstanding average of 68.91 and a strike rate of 105.7. Gill’s remarkable performance not only earned him accolades but also solidified his position as India’s top run-scorer in ODIs for the year.

Last year was when Kohli regained his fine form and he really came into life during the World Cup. During the course of the tournament, the Indian star batter amassed a record-breaking 765 runs across 11 innings, boasting an average of 95.62 and a strike rate of 90.3. His efforts included three centuries and six fifties, with his hundred against New Zealand in the semi-final helping him break Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record for most hundreds in the 50-over format. Kohli was adjudged as the player of the tournament for his efforts. Kohli ended second on the list of the highest run-getters in ODIs in 2023 with 1377 to his name.

Shami was the spearhead of India’s attack during the World Cup as the pacer picked up 24 wickets in seven matches. Overall, Shami picked up 43 wickets in 19 matches during the course of the year.
