Schools Closed in J&K’s Ramban District Today Due to Heavy Rains – News18

Ramban DC has ordered the closure of all government and private schools in the district up to the Higher Secondary level as a result of the ongoing downpour

The National Highway-44 in Ramban district Jammu and Kashmir has been closed for today, October 17, owing to heavy rainfall, according to news agency ANI. Mussarat Zia, Ramban’s Deputy Commissioner, turned to the microblogging site “X”. (formerly known as Twitter) to communicate this critical information with the public. He strongly encouraged everyone to avoid using NH-44 today for safety concerns and instead rely on Traffic Control Units (TCUs) for timely information.

In his announcement on X, Deputy Commissioner Ramban stated, “Due to the heavy rainfall, NH-44 is currently blocked at Cafeteria Morh, near Ramban. We encourage people to stay informed through TCUs and avoid any travel plans for today.”

Additionally, according to ANI, Deputy Commissioner Ramban has ordered the closure of all government and private schools in the Ramban district up to the Higher Secondary level as a result of the ongoing downpour. The scheduled exams are nevertheless going to be conducted as per the original schedules.

“In light of the continuous rainfall experienced since yesterday, all government and private schools up to the Higher Secondary level in District Ramban will remain closed today. However, any scheduled exams will proceed as initially notified,” Zia said.

In the meantime, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has published a weather forecast for today, predicting isolated heavy rain with possible lightning and thunderstorms across several districts of Jammu and Kashmir.

Heavy rains have also lashed Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of the southernmost state of Kerala, since October 14, which was followed by the Central Water Commission issuing a flood warning for the Karamana, Neyyar, and Vamanapuram rivers. In light of this, all schools, colleges and institutions of higher education in Thiruvananthapuram were given orders to remain closed on October 16. All educational institutions have been ordered to remain closed due to the heavy rains that have led to floods and landslides in several parts of the city.

The next five days in Kerala are predicted to be filled with torrential rain. The districts of Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad have all been given yellow alerts by the meteorological department. The MET department had also issued an orange alert for Monday in a total of four regions. A yellow alert indicates rainfall between 6 and 11 cm, whereas an orange alert indicates rainfall between 6 and 20 cm.
