A great pitching duel has been put on ice between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Toronto Blue Jays.
The pregame narrative: Fans were supposed to see all-star Zac Gallen battle Toronto ace Kevin Gausman, but the latter has been scratched from Saturday’s start due to right side discomfort per Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae. Instead, Chris Bassitt will take his place.

Blue Jays vs. Diamondbacks preview
Toronto’s first game back from the all-star break was a successful one with both the bats and pitching powering the team to victory.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a home run in his first at-bat, Jose Berrios twirled 5.1 innings of one-run baseball and the Blue Jays’ bats took control of a 2-2 tie in the seventh with a five-run showing. They held on for a 7-2 win, marking their sixth victory in their last seven outings.
Runs may be harder to come by for Toronto, however, in the second game of this series.
Arizona is sending Gallen to the bump and he’s having an excellent season. Gallen is 11-3 in 2023, pairing a 3.04 ERA with a sterling 2.77 FIP and fresh off his first-ever all-star appearance. The righty is a shining example that you don’t need to light up the radar gun to have success, as he only has 33rd-percentile fastball velocity per Baseball Savant.
Toronto was supposed to counter with Gausman before the injury news broke but will now roll with Bassitt. He owns a 4.19 ERA and a 4.81 FIP this year.
Prop markets
Betting on offence may not be the play for today’s game when looking at Toronto’s top hitters.

Bassitt is a little more hittable, with opposing hitters batting .238 against him. He’s allowed 18 home runs this season which is twice as much as Gallen (nine).
