Winter travel advisory issued for Toronto in advance of snow, freezing rain

A winter weather travel advisory has been issued for Monday night in Toronto in advance of the expected snow, freezing rain and rain expected to hit the city, Environment Canada says.

Snow is expected to be heavy at times with total accumulations of 5 to 10 centimetres. It’s expected to begin later this afternoon or early Monday evening and end by early Tuesday morning.

The snow may become mixed with ice pellets late this evening before tapering to light snow, drizzle or freezing drizzle by early Tuesday morning, Environment Canada says.

The advisory was upgraded from a special weather statement that was previously in effect.

Monday is expected to be -1 C with the temperature rising to 0 C in the evening. Tuesday will be 3 C with periods of light snow with temperatures dipping to -3 C in the evening. Wednesday is predicted to be 5 C with a chance of flurries or rain showers.

Travel may be hazardous due to sudden changes in the weather. Environment Canada advises to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions and to take extra care when walking or driving.

Environment Canada puts Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills under travel advisory

Environment Canada has issued a winter weather travel advisory for Halton Monday, an upgrade from the earlier “special weather statement” alert.

The latest advisory is in effect tonight, with the national weather agency forecasting snow to “begin late Monday afternoon or early this evening and may be heavy at times this evening.”

The hazards include snow fall amounts of five to 10 cm, with peak snowfall rates of two to four centimetres per hour, particularly during the evening commute — resulting in reduced visibility and blowing snow and slippery surfaces. Expect strong easterly winds gusting 60 km/h today and tonight followed by westerly winds gusting up to 60 km/h Tuesday.
