WATCH: Sumit Antil Smashes Own World Record To Win Asian Paralympics Gold In Men’s Javelin Throw Event

India’s Paralympic javelin thrower Sumit Antil smashed his own record while compatriot Pushpendra Singh finished in third place in the men’s Javelin Throw-F64 final on Day 3 of the Asian Para Games 2023 in Hangzhou on Wednesday. Sumit made history by setting new records for the Asian Para Games, the World, and Asia with a remarkable 73.29m throw, achieved on his third attempt, earning him gold.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Arachchige Samitha clinched silver with a 62.42m effort. Pushpendra Singh followed closely, achieving a throw of 62.06m to claim bronze.

Following these accomplishments, India currently ranks 5th, boasting a medal haul of 36 – 10 gold, 12 silver, and 14 bronze. The Indian team hopes to mirror the success they had on Day 1, where they secured 17 medals in total.

For this year’s Asian Para Games, India has dispatched its largest-ever delegation, with 303 athletes, comprising 191 men and 112 women. Comparatively, in the 2018 edition, India was represented by 190 athletes, who brought home an impressive 72 medals, 15 of which were gold, marking their best performance in this quadrennial event.

Mwanwhile, Indian paddler Bhavina Patel settled for a bronze medal after suffering a defeat in the women’s singles – Class 4 semifinals in the ongoing 4th Asian Para Games on Wednesday. China’s Xiaodan Gu proved to be a major threat to the Indian paddler in the first game. Xiaodan running high on intensity clinched an 11-7 victory, but Bhavina bounced back in the following game to bring the match to parity with an 11-6 victory.

Xiaodan switched gears in the next two games making Bhavina struggle for each point. In the third game, the Chinese paddler swept the third game 11-6 and went on to win the fourth game to seal her place in the final by 11-7.
