New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh government has formed two three-member Special Task Forces to probe the killings of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf. The two were killed in Prayagraj on Saturday by three assailants posing as media persons. The first SIT, which will be led by Assistant DCP Satish Chandra, will investigate Atiq Ahmed’s murder, while the second will supervise the first unit. The second SIT has been formed by Prayagraj Police in the murder case registered at Shahganj police station.
Atiq Ahmed and his brother were shot dead on Saturday amid police presence and buried in Prayagraj at the same graveyard where his son was laid to rest. The burial took place late on Sunday with a large police presence. Only a few relatives of the deceased brothers and locals were permitted to attend the funeral.
A three-member supervisory team has also been constituted to ensure qualitative inquiry and timely action. This team is led by Prayagraj’s additional director general of police.
According to the statement, the other two members are the Prayagraj commissioner of police and the head of the Forensic Science Laboratory in Lucknow. Atiq and Ashraf, who were arrested in February in connection with the killing of Umesh Pal, were gunned down late Saturday night in Prayagraj by three men posing as journalists as the siblings were being taken to a hospital under police escort.
