Twitter now defaults to a ‘For you’ TikTok-style page and users aren’t impressed

Twitter users will now see algorithmically-driven feeds as soon they open the app and some are not happy about the changes.

Twitter released the new function for iOS users first on Wednesday. Mobile users will now see a “For you” page when they open the Twitter app, instead of a reverse-chronological feed of tweets from the accounts a user follows. The “For you” page, which shares a name with the TikTok app’s default page, feeds tweets from people that users follow, mixed with tweets the platform’s algorithm suggests.

Previously, users were able to default to a reverse-chronological feed upon launching the app. Now, Twitter automatically defaults users to a “For you” page. Users will need to swipe to a secondary feed, called “Following,” to see a reverse-chronological feed of tweets from users they follow.

This is not the first time Twitter has created an algorithmically-driven feed. In March 2022, Twitter made a similar change. The algorithmic feed was called “Home,” and the reverse-chronological feed was called “Latest.” The change then was met with swift backlash from platform users.

According to a tweet from Twitter Support on Wednesday, the “For you” and “Following” feeds replace the “Home” and “Latest” feeds.

In December 2022, Musk tweeted the company has plans to increase Twitter’s character limit to 4,000.

Here’s what people said about Twitter, on Twitter:

U.K.-based speaker and mental health advocate Rach Idowu said she “really dislikes” the new feature, which made it harder to engage with communities she follows.

Author and media personality Jason Rabinowitz tweeted he wanted to be able to set his default page as the reverse-chronological feed.

Author Nooruddean Choudry also tweeted about the feature.

Here’s what else Twitter users are saying:
