Torstar’s ‘Unchartered’ investigation earns Michener Award nomination

Two Torstar reporters have earned a prestigious Michener Award nomination for their investigative journalism.

The Toronto Star’s Rachel Mendleson and the Hamilton Spectator’s Steve Buist are both finalists for the 2022 Michener Award for meritorious public service journalism.

They earned the nomination for their investigative series ‘Unchartered,’ which looked at police Charter violations across Canada.

Both reporters investigated more than 600 Charter cases and found that only a small number of officers faced serious professional consequences.

“These Michener Awards finalists can and should be proud. They demonstrate yet again this year the profound and positive impact of quality journalism in Canada, often while defending the interests of our most vulnerable,” said Michener Foundation President Pierre-Paul Noreau.

Other finalists include CBC Saskatchewan for their investigation into a former judge and scholar where they cast doubt on her ancestry and claimed accomplishments; The Globe and Mail on Hockey Canada’s secret funds and for an investigation into how B.C. failed an Indigenous teen found dead; The Eastern Graphic on a public-health crisis in Prince Edward Island.

The Michener Awards were founded in 1971 with the goal of honouring excellence in public service journalism.
