Toronto extreme cold: Alert in effect for the city of Toronto and most of southern Ontario

Get out your mittens, Toronto. It’s positively frigid out there this morning.

An extreme cold weather alert is in effect for the city and most of southern Ontario and temperatures are expected to linger until Saturday morning.

Wind chills near -30 C are expected Friday morning. While the wind chill values are expected to relent slightly in the afternoon, Environment Canada says they could return in some areas in the evening and into Saturday morning when temperatures are expected to rise to -3 C, with a chance of flurries.

Cold weather risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter, Environment Canada says.

Toronto’s warming centres are open but demand is reportedly high at the moment. Warming centres offer washrooms, snacks and a place to rest.

What else:

  • On Twitter, Pearson said the cold weather would be challenging for ground crews and their equipment. “If travelling, please pack some patience as they may need to take breaks to warm up,” they tweeted.

Tips for beating the cold:

  • Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant.
  • Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

  • If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.
