NEW DELHI: Skoda Kushaq has been unveiled and the ‘king’ is now gearing up for a June launch. Skoda Kushaq is an important offering for the Czech automaker as it is not only making its SUV range accessible but it might trump out Skoda Karoq from the Indian market.
While the Skoda Kushaq looks relatively promising compared to the current competitive compact SUV market, TOI Auto takes a closer look at the Czech automaker’s ‘Made-for-India’ SUV and see how it fares against its highly popular key rivals in the market, the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos.

Engine and transmission
The Skoda Kushaq comes with two engines- 1.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol. The 1.0-litre TSI mill is very similar to the one under Skoda Rapid’s hood and it offers 115 PS of power and 175 Nm of torque. The 1.5-litre TSI unit is borrowed from the temporarily phased-out Skoda Karoq and it offers a total power output of 150 PS and a peak torque of 250 Nm. While the 6-speed MT is offered as standard, the 1.0-litre TSI unit gets a 6-speed torque converter and the 1.5-litre TSI unit gets a 7-speed DSG too.
The Hyundai Creta comes with 3 engine options- 1.5-litre diesel, 1.4-litre turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre petrol. The 1.5-litre U2 CRDi diesel unit offers 115 PS of power and 250 Nm of torque. The 1.4-litre Kappa turbo-petrol unit offers a maximum power output of 140 PS and offers a torque of 242 Nm. The 1.5-litre MPi petrol unit offers a power output of 115 PS and offers a peak torque of 144 Nm. The transmission duties are shared by a 6-speed MT, 6-speed automatic, 7-speed DCT and an iVT gearbox.

The Kia Seltos and the Hyundai Creta share the exact same engines offering the exact same output. The transmission duties are shared by the same options- 6-speed AMT, iVT, 6-speed AT, 7-speed DCT.
Skoda Kushaq doesn’t feature a diesel engine yet but both its TSI engines are quite powerful compared to the petrol mills boasted by its rivals. If diesel’s not your choice then Kushaq could definitely be your first preference in this aspect.
Safety
Skoda Kushaq comes with features like ESC, multi-collision brake, 6 airbags, optional curtain airbags, ISOFIX anchor, hill hold control, light and rain sensors, rear parking sensor, rear-view camera and front parking sensor, optional tyre pressure monitor and a few more.
