Sunil Gavaskar praises Team India for successful 2023 barring ‘just one bad day’ in World Cup final

Legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar lauded the Indian men’s and women’s teams for their impressive showing in 2023.

The women’s team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, recently beat England in the Only Test, after which they got the better of Alyssa Healy’s Australia at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

It also happened to be the first time that India beat Australia in a Women’s Test since their first meeting back in 1977.

“I think it’s been a fantastic year for both the men’s and the women’s team, particularly the way the women’s team has performed,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying on Star Sports show ‘Follow the Blues’

“Those two Test wins towards the year-end, one against England and one against Australia, both teams against whom the Indian women’s team have had tough times earlier on.”

Gavaskar also said that apart from the World Cup 2023 final, the Indian men’s team had a decent year. After winning 10 matches in a row in the mega event at home, Rohit Sharma and Co. lost to Australia by six wickets in front of a packed house at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

“That’s been the most exciting aspect of cricket apart from, of course, what we saw in the World Cup. The 10 straight wins, and, then, just that one bad day, which sadly happened to be the finals of the World Cup. So really some exciting times in 2023,” Gavaskar added.

India also lost the final of the World Test Championship 2021-23 where Australia defeated them. India are currently in South Africa where they are taking part in a two-match Test series.

After losing the series opener by an innings and 32 runs at the SuperSport Park in Centurion, India will be looking to make amends in the second Test, starting December 3 at the Newlands in Cape Town.
