Some residents still displaced after Scarborough apartment fire

Some residents are still displaced after a two-alarm fire tore through an apartment building in Scarborough on Saturday.

According to Toronto Community Housing Corporation, most residents of the West Hill Apartments highrise were able to return to their units on Saturday night, but some of those living on the fifth floor are still impacted.

TCHC said they provided transportation to family or friends and, in some cases, hotel accommodations for those who couldn’t return home.

Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie tweeted her condolences on Sunday to the family and friends of those injured in the fire.

McKelvie also said that the investigation is expected to extend to at least tomorrow at which time the fifth floor of the building will be returned to the care of TCHC.

At around 3:30 p.m. Saturday emergency crews were called to the building at Kingston Road and Lawrence Avenue East with reports of a fire.

Toronto Fire confirmed shortly after that one person had been removed from the building without vital signs, later they confirmed that person had died.

According to Toronto Fire, four other people were transported to hospital in serious condition.

The Star had previously reported that five additional people were transported to hospital.

Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg said in a press conference that the building recently went through a routine inspection around the middle of January and there were no significant issues and no issues with the fire code.
