Second snowfall of the seasons brings travel advisories back

Travel advisories are back for most of the GTA, with the second snowfall of the season hitting Southern Ontario.

Environment Canada has issued winter weather travel advisories for Halton- Peel, York-Durham and Barrie-Midland regions.

The GTA woke up to a light snowfall and freezing drizzles from a low-pressure system sweeping from the west.

Toronto police advises drivers to slow down and maintain a safe behind the wheel due to slippery roads and snow piling up on the ground.

“There’s always collisions every day, it’s hard to say whether or not they’re weather-related, but I haven’t seen any uptick due to the weather today,” a Toronto police traffic services officer said.

Peel Regional Police and OPP Highway Safety division spokespeople told the Star collisions haven’t occurred in any significant level since this morning.

The snowfall will last throughout the day, picking up during the morning but easing to flurries this afternoon.

York-Durham and Barrie-Midland regions are bracing for up to 10 centimetres of snow by the end of the day, while Toronto is expecting up to two centimetres.

Environment Canada is advising drivers and pedestrians of a thin ice layer underneath the accumulated snow due to freezing drizzle.

Visibility might also be suddenly reduced at times of heavy snow, says the weather agency, advising drivers to slow down on slippery surfaces like highways.

“Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas,” read the weather advisories.

“The blanket advice is always to drive with respect to these conditions,” a Toronto police officer said. “It’s slippery, so keep your distance and drive slower.”
