Rohit Sharma back as T20I captain: Hardik Pandya won’t lead side in World Cup, says Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra has claimed that Rohit Sharma returning as the captain of the T20I side for the series against Afghanistan is pointing towards the fact that he will lead the side in the World Cup as well, even if Hardik Pandya makes a return.

Rohit and Virat Kohli made a return to the side in the shortest format of the game after a year-long hiatus. Since the loss in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022, Hardik has been the one leading India in the T20 format, whenever he is available to play.

The all-rounder would even recently replace Rohit as the skipper of Mumbai Indians side in the IPL as well. However, with Hardik still recovering from injury, Rohit has been made as the skipper for the Afghanistan, something Chopra feels is a landmark decision.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former opener said that he expects Rohit to captain in the World Cup as well.

“Rohit is now the captain and I feel he will be the captain in the World Cup as well. I feel this was a landmark selection, because if Rohit remains captain, he will play the World Cup. If he plays the World Cup, then he will be the captain,” said Chopra.

Less chance of Rohit Sharma being in T20 World Cup squad and not being captain: Aakash Chopra

Chopra further commented that he doesn’t feel Hardik will be the captain even if he returns to the side. The former cricketer also felt the chances are very less that Rohit will be in the squad and not be the skipper of the side.

“Don’t think that Hardik will become captain once he is back. I can almost give it in writing. I can’t guarantee anything but the chances are very less that Rohit will be there and won’t be the captain,” said Chopra.
