Rafael Nadal’s return going almost better than expected: Uncle Toni Nadal

Rafael Nadal’s uncle, Toni, has admitted that the Spaniard has got off to a brilliant start since making his return to the court after a lengthy hiatus.

Nadal was out of action for close to a year following an injury and made his return to the court during the 2024 Brisbane International. The former World No.1 defeated Dominic Thiem in his comeback match in straight sets.

He would then defeat Jason Kubler in similar fashion on January 4 to make it to the quarterfinals, where he would face Jordan Thompson.

Speaking to Onda Cero Mallorca, Toni suggested that Nadal has had an exciting start but would like to see the former World No.1 taking on tougher opponents. The Spaniard’s uncle also went on to say that the return has been better than what they had expected.

“Rafa can be very happy because the level he is showing is good enough. It’s an exciting start, but we have to see him in more difficult games. At the moment, things are going almost better than we expected,” said Toni.

“Rafa has always had the good ability to get into shape very quickly. Sometimes, after many injuries, he has come back even better than he had done before. This time is the most difficult because the years are there and it is more complicated. Let’s see if I can continue like this,” he added.

Rafael Nadal can have a good Australian Open if he gets a favourable draw: Uncle Toni

Nadal’s uncle also said that the Spaniard can potentially have a good Australian Open run this year if he gets a favourable draw.

“I think you do have options. If Rafael manages to play a few more matches, if in Brisbane he plays with more qualified people and in the Australian Open he has a good draw, essential as he is not seeded, it is possible that he will have a good tournament,” said Toni.
