Partner Content | Elks vs. Stampeders picks and odds: Take the points with improving Edmonton

The Edmonton Elks and Calgary Stampeders square off in Week 3 with a pair of streaks on the line.

The pregame narrative: Edmonton and Calgary may be close geographically but are nowhere near each other in the West Division standings. The Elks are still searching for their first win this season while the Stamps are undefeated through two weeks.

Check out our Elks vs. Stampeders picks for June 25.

Elks vs. Stampeders picks overview

  • Elks +9.5 points (-125)
  • Under 49.5 points (-121)
  • Elks to win 1st Half – Tie No Bet (+210)

Elks vs. Stampeders picks

Best bet: Elks +9.5 points (-125)

Edmonton showed marked improvement from Week 1 to Week 2 and we expect the team to take another step forward this week against Calgary.

This is head coach Chris Jones’ first season coaching the Elks since 2015 so some buffer time should’ve been expected. Edmonton was blown out 59-15 in the season-opener against the B.C. Lions but led with under five minutes to go last week against the Saskatchewan Roughriders before losing 26-16.

While the Stampeders are undefeated this year it’s not like they’ve had their way with opponents. Calgary narrowly defeated the Montreal Alouettes 30-27 in Week 1 and eked out a 33-30 overtime win against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last week. The Stamps didn’t blow many teams out of the water last season, either, covering this number in just four of 15 games.

Another reason why we’re fading Calgary against the spread is turnovers.

Fumbles and interceptions can be unpredictable to project and it’s clear the Stampeders have been aided by good luck in that department. Calgary’s plus-four turnover differential is second in the CFL and its 31 points from turnovers this season are more than any other team.

The improving Elks are the side we’re taking for this all-Alberta matchup.

Key stat: Calgary’s +6-point differential is the second-worst number of any team in the West Division.

Quick picks

Under 49.5 points (-121): The Elks have been running slowly on offence with just 101 scrimmage plays this year (second-last in the CFL). They’re also averaging just 6.1 yards-per-play which is the fewest in the league.

Neither Calgary nor Edmonton has provided many splash plays as they’re tied for the fewest 30-plus yard completions in the league with (two each). Additionally, Calgary is averaging just seven yards per pass, the lowest mark in the league.

Elks to win 1st Half – Tie No Bet (+210): Despite being 2-0 on the season Calgary owns a horrendous -31-point differential in the first half this year. The Stamps have lost the first half in each of their two games in 2022. The Elks are worth a first-half bet despite not winning one this season considering the juicy plus-money odds.
