Partner Content | Blue Jays vs. White Sox picks and odds: Expect Toronto to rough up Lucas Giolito

The Toronto Blue Jays have lost five of their last six and hope to avoid a sweep against the Chicago White Sox this afternoon.

The pregame narrative: Baseball fans were treated to a back and forth extra-inning showdown last night — Blue Jays fans, a horror show. Strike zone inconsistencies, three blown leads and George Springer exiting with elbow discomfort marked one of the more unpleasant losses for Toronto this season. Ross Stripling takes the mound opposite a struggling Lucas Giolito for the final game in Chi-Town.

Check out our Blue Jays vs. White Sox picks for June 22.

Blue Jays vs. White Sox picks overview

  • Blue Jays over 4.5 runs scored (-127)
  • Under 0.5 runs, first inning (+107)
  • Blue Jays moneyline (-117)

Blue Jays vs. White Sox picks

Best bet: Blue Jays over 4.5 runs (-127)

We believe this line has a great chance of cashing today even if it is a little chalky.

Giolito has been fighting it over his past four starts, giving up five-plus runs in three of those contests. In the outlier, the 6-foot-6 lefty still struggled, allowing four earned through six innings against the Texas Rangers in what was eventually an 11-9 defeat.

So where did these fits begin? Against none other than the Blue Jays.

Giolito took the mound against Toronto on May 31, where he gave up six ER on eight hits in just 4.2 IP. Toronto was eating what he was serving. The Blue Jays hit seven balls with an exit velocity of over 100 mph, with five of them going for extra bases.

Player Result EV(MPH)
Alejandro Kirk Groundout 109.9
Teoscar Hernandez Double 108.9
Loudres Gurriel Jr. Single 106.4
Alejandro Kirk Home Run 104.9
George Springer Double 103.8
Teoscar Hernandez Double 101.5
Alejandro Kirk Home Run 101.3

His ERA has ballooned from an elite 2.63 to a pedestrian 4.78 since that game.

We believe Toronto will be able to replicate their performance from that game. The Blue Jays bats have gotten hot, and despite not winning games, they’ve been putting up numbers in June.

Charlie Montoyo’s squad has scored a league-leading 123 runs this month with the second most hits (204) and second-highest team BA (.283). They’ve scored five-plus runs in three straight games, as well.

Key stat: Teams have scored over 4.5 runs in each of Giolito’s last four starts.

Quick picks

No run 1st inning (+107): We mentioned Giolito’s struggles, but he’s only given up one first-inning run in his past four outings. If Toronto gets after him early, that’s good for our best bet, but we’re willing to wager it takes a little time for the Blue Jay bats to gear up. Stripling has also been stellar in the opening frame, giving up zero runs in his last three outings.

Blue Jays ML (-117): We like Toronto to avoid a sweep for the second time in consecutive series with a win today. Stripling has allowed just two ER in his last 14.2 innings pitched and has been remarkably consistent.

With Giolito’s struggles and Toronto’s hot bats, don’t expect the Jays to walk away from Chicago empty-handed.

Odds as of 9:35 a.m. ET on 06/22/2022.
