Legendary Australia spinner Nathan Lyon top-scored for Australia in their second innings of the first Test match vs New Zealand. On Saturday, 2 March, nightwatchman Lyon contributed 41 runs off Australia’s total of 164 in Wellington.

The spinner attained a unique record of becoming the first ever cricketer to reach 1500 runs without hitting a single fifty or a hundred. Lyon’s 41 off 46 balls helped Australia set a target of 369 runs for the New Zealand side, led by Tim Southee. Lyon’s innings included 6 boundaries as he created crucial partnerships with Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green to take Australia to a respectable total.

The spinner had picked 4 wickets in the first innings of the Test match, helping Australia bowl out New Zealand for just 179 runs. Lyon was on the money once again in the second innings as well, picking up 2 wickets from his 16 overs.

At the end of Day 3, New Zealand were 111/3 in 41 overs, and needed 258 runs to win the first Test match. Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell were batting when the umpires called stumps and had already built a partnership of 52 runs. Ravindra had hit his half-century and remained not out at 56. New Zealand have a tough ask at their hands and will hope for strong performances from Tom Blundell and Glenn Phillips if they are to win the Test match against Australia.

Nathan Lyon spoke after Day 3 and called it a great day of Test cricket.

“Great day of Test cricket. I am a big fan when the ball spins obviously. I thought Glenn bowled pretty well to take five wickets, hats off to him. Pretty good day. I thought Rachin and Daryl played superb innings there. Rachin seems like a really good player, first time I have bowled to him. Watched a lot of him during the World Cup and he’s going to be a superstar. He played very well there. If we can come out here and just do our job and put the pressure on, hopefully we will crack them,” the legendary spinner said.

Lyon currently has 523 wickets to his name and is ranked 7th in the list of highest wicket-takers in the history of Test cricket.
