Jill Biden at a curling match? That’s Sophie Grégoire Trudeau’s plan

OTTAWA—Those hoping to catch a glimpse of U.S. first lady Jill Biden when she makes her first official visit to Canada’s capital are going to have to “hurry hard.”

The first public event listed on her schedule is a visit to a downtown curling club, where Biden will be treated to an “introduction to the sport of curling” alongside Sophie Grégoire Trudeau.

The pair will then join a group of young Canadians at the club for a discussion about “youth wellness and mental health,” which Grégoire Trudeau will moderate.

Details have now emerged about what U.S. President Joe Biden and the first lady will get up to during their long-awaited visit, which begins Thursday night and ends with a gala dinner at the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum Friday evening. Security has been tightened around the downtown core, with trucks and police vehicles blocking a portion of Wellington Street in front of Parliament Hill.

Just a kilometre away down Sussex Drive marks the first lady’s second stop with Grégoire Trudeau on Friday: the National Gallery of Canada’s “Uninvited” exhibit, which honours “the work of settler and Indigenous” female artists.

It won’t be the first time Biden has spent time with the woman former first lady Michelle Obama once called her “soul mate.” The duo most recently met at the North American Leaders’ Summit in Mexico City back in January.

While Friday’s itinerary signals a carefully curated affair, Grégoire Trudeau has been known to let her hair down with other public figures in the past.

Last fall, she appeared on Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle’s podcast, where the pair reminisced about Grégoire Trudeau’s visit to Markle’s Montecito home.

“We swam, we drank wine, we splashed in the water,” Markle recalled, revealing that a critical fixture of the gathering was an inflatable pool float resembling a pizza slice.

Back in 2016, Grégoire Trudeau also welcomed actress Emma Watson to Ottawa, when the United Nations ambassador touched down in the capital to talk gender equality with the prime minister. In an Instagram post, Watson shared a video of the actress perched on the back of Grégoire Trudeau’s Vespa as the two zipped around the city.
