Jaker Ali dejected but not broken after heroic knock in losing cause vs Sri Lanka

Jaker Ali was disappointed after Bangladesh agonisingly lost the 1st T20I against Sri Lanka by 3 runs on Monday, March 4 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.

Jaker racked up a half-century off 25 balls, after which he scored 68 runs off 34 deliveries with 4 fours and 6 sixes. Despite his valiant efforts on an excellent pitch to bat on in Sylhet, the Tigers fell short.

Jaker said that he would have been happier had he scored 10-12 more runs. Earlier, Jaker also lost the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024 final while playing for Comilla Victorians against the Fortune Barishal.

“If we could win the game with me scoring 10 to 12 runs… in that case, I would have been much happier. I played well Alhamdulillah but if I could win the game I would have been much happier,” Jaker told reporters.

“You can see through my face how I am and every defeat is hurting and I lost the final [BPL for Comilla Victorians] too. I am sure I will not be broken and now we have to see how we can win the next game and I feel we have a lot of things to gain from this match,” he said.

I had the confidence

After Bangladesh were asked to chase down 207, Jaker batted at No.6 and teed off right from the word go. With 10 runs to win off the last 4 balls, Dasun Shanaka dismissed Jaker and sealed the fate of the match.

“I asked Rishad (Hossain) to give me strike and unfortunately his wicket fell but I was on strike and we needed 10 runs from four balls and I had the confidence I can do it because throughout the innings it was going well but [I] could not connect and it went to the hand and that is it,” Jaker added.

After losing the opener, Bangladesh will be looking to make amends in the 2nd T20I, scheduled to take place on Wednesday, March 6.
