Is Rinku Singh set for a Test debut in Dharamsala? Aakash Chopra clarifies

India batter Rinku Singh was spotted with Brendon McCullum in Dharamsala ahead of the fifth and final Test match in the India vs England series. This gave rise to speculation if Rinku Singh was going to be announced as a late entry into the Indian Test team.

The lower middle-order batter batter was named in the Indian A side against England Lions but had not been named in the Indian squad for the final three Test matches.

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra took to his YouTube channel to clarify the situation and said that Rinku had visited Dharamsala for an Adidas ad shoot and had nothing to do with the Test series.

“Out of nowhere, Rinku Singh’s photo emerged from Dharamsala. Everyone was speculating if Rinku Singh has been named in the India squad vs England. However, I need to clarify that Rinku has not been named in the India squad, there will be no debut,” Aakash Chopra said in his video.

“Rinku Singh was in Dharamsala for an Adidas shoot. This could have been for the T20 World Cup 2024. There are several India cricketers in Dharamsala and that’s why Rinku Singh was also called upon,” Aakash Chopra added.

Rinku Singh’s Meteoric Rise

Rinku Singh has been sensational since his debut in the Indian team. The batter has scored 356 runs in 11 T20I innings at an average of 89 and strike rate of 176+. Rinku recently scored two fifties in the T20I format, with the latest one coming in the series against Afghanistan.

It is expected that Rinku will be one of first choice in the Indian T20I squad for the T20 World Cup 2024, set to be held in June this year. The batter has been in phenomenal touch since his breakout season in the 2023 Indian Premier League. Rinku scored 474 runs at an average of 59.25 and a strike-rate nearing 150. This led to the Indian team taking notice of the batter’s talents and was fast-tracked into the Indian white-ball team.

Rinku’s exploits in the Indian domestic red ball arena is equally impressive. The batter has played 47 first class matches and has scored 3173 runs at an average of 54.70.
