A freezing rain warning has been issued for Toronto and southern Ontario, Environment Canada says.
Freezing rain is expected to begin this morning and end this afternoon. Freezing rain mixed with ice pellets and snow is expected to fall north of Highway 401. Temperatures near Lake Ontario are more likely to remain above the freezing mark throughout the day, so these areas are likely to see rain.
Ice up to a few millimetres is possible on untreated surfaces, the weather agency warns.
The freezing rain will transition to rain or drizzle this afternoon as temperatures rise above 0 C.
Snow showers mixed with freezing drizzle are likely Friday morning, followed by snow showers Friday afternoon.
Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery, Environment Canada says. Be careful when walking or driving in affected areas.
In a release issued Wednesday, Toronto says they’ve deployed crews and equipment to strategic and high-priority locations around the city so they can respond as soon as required.
Salting will begin as soon as snow starts to accumulate.
Schools are open but there have been some bus cancellations in Halton, York, Peel and Durham regions.
This is a developing story.
