Family mourns the return of a young yoga teacher’s body to Gwalior from China amid suspicions of foul play in his death

The body of the young Indian yoga teacher, who was found hanging in China over two months ago, returned home to the city of Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh on Monday. The return of Prabal Kushwaha’s body for final rites brought tears to his family’s eyes, as they mourned his loss and expressed their suspicions about the circumstances surrounding his death.

In late December, the 24-year-old yoga teacher was found hanging almost a week ago following a fight over a financial dispute with the owner of the institute where he used to teach yoga. His family refuted Chinese officials’ classification of it as a case of suicide and alleged the involvement of a Chinese woman and her Indian companion, claiming Prabal was murdered by his colleagues.

A few days after the news of Prabal’s demise broke, his father sought help from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, and Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia to repatriate his son’s body to India. According to a Change.org petition started on Dec 29, Kushwaha was residing in Beijing, where he dedicated himself to teaching yoga.

“He maintained regular contact with his family until Tuesday when communication stopped. The family received distressing news from the embassy that Prabal was found dead in his studio. The exact circumstances surrounding his death remain mysterious, and his lifeless body was discovered hanging a week ago on December 24, 2023,” it added.

Last seen via video call in late December, Prabal’s communication ceased afterward. This prompted his parents to contact his female acquaintances in China, identified as “Su-Chin and Miss Rosie”, with no success. Upon reaching the Indian embassy in China, they received the news of their son’s demise. Earlier, media reports said that Prabal initially encountered the Chinese woman and Indian, Rosie, during his yoga diploma pursuit in Bengaluru. He later accepted a job at a yoga center in Beijing.
