Extreme cold warning issued for Toronto as temperatures could plummet to -30C this week

You thought it was cold? Well it’s about to get colder.

Environment Canada issued an extreme cold weather alert for Toronto on Thursday morning.

Toronto is set to be blasted with cold temperatures expected to hit a low of -30C with the wind chill.

Steven Flisfeder, an Environment Canada meteorologist, said that daytime highs are expected to only get up to about -15C adding that there is a chance of flurries on Thursday.

“There could be some visibility issues later today, especially near the rush hour,” said Flisfeder.

The warning is in effect for Thursday night into Friday morning. But, temperatures may hit -30C again late Friday into Saturday.

According to the warning, frostbite can develop “within minutes” when bare skin is exposed to this kind of cold.

“The longer you’re outside, the higher the risk of frostbite becomes,” said Flisfeder. “You should be taking precautions to limit [skin] exposure as much as possible.”

Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health also issued a cold weather alert Thursday.

According to the city, warming centres will be open Thursday at Scarborough Civic Centre, Metro Hall, Mitchell Field Community Centre and Cecil Community Centre.
