Eight Canadian divers qualify for world championships

Eight divers will represent Canada at this year’s World Aquatics Championships from July 14-22 in Fukuoka, Japan.

Pamela Ware, Mia Vallee, Caeli McKay, Elaena Dick and Kate Miller will compete on the women’s side. Nathan Zsombor-Murray, Rylan Wiens and Bryden Hattie will represent the men.

Vallee won silver in the three-metre event and bronze in the one-metre event last year to become Canada’s first woman to hit the podium in two individual competitions at a world championship. Wiens and Zsombor-Murray became the first men to podium in the 10-metre synchronized platform event, capturing bronze.

Ware returns to the Worlds after taking time off last season to work on the mental side of her game after a missed dive at Tokyo 2020.

The 30-year-old from Greenfield Park, Que., has bounced back since returning to action. Ware won three medals at the diving World Cup event in Montreal earlier this month, and beat her personal record in the three-metre springboard to win gold at the Canadian National championships over the weekend.

The first spots in the Paris 2024 Games are at stake at the world championships as the 12 highest-placed athletes in each individual event can secure one quota place for their national Olympic committee.
