Chiyaan Vikram says that acting in Thangalaan was like a journey more than a film experience.
Chiyaan Vikram, who stars in and as Thangalaan, says that it was an instant yes when director Pa Ranjith approached him for the movie.
Chiyaan Vikram’s latest film, Thangalaan, has already garnered significant buzz and is deemed a hit at the box office, based solely on its collections in the South. Directed by Pa Ranjith, the film is set to release in Hindi on September 6. Thangalaan, which stars Vikram alongside Malavika Mohanan, Parvathy Thiruvothu, and Daniel Caltagirone, is set in the Kolar Gold Fields and tells the story of the tribes and their leader. From his hair to his costume and makeup, Vikram is unrecognisable in the film’s trailer. The actor underwent a major transformation to embody the character, and Vikram reveals that he discovered a different side of himself through Thangalaan.
“I think this is the most immersive experience I’ve had. I felt I went even deeper into who I am, in my truest, rawest form. As an actor, when I tried to discover that part of me, it was very enchanting in so many ways because I didn’t know I could do it,” he shared in an exclusive interview with News18. While Vikram did the hard work to transform into Thangalaan, the actor credits the visionary behind the film, Pa Ranjith, for his guidance. Vikram states that Ranjith was “always there to guide” him and that there’s “nothing more beautiful and challenging for an actor than to do something like this.”
Vikram acknowledges that not many actors of his caliber and stature would take on a role like Thangalaan. So, what made him choose this project? “Because nobody else would do it (laughs), and it begged to be made. The fact that a mainstream hero can look like this and do this excited me. That, in large part, is the USP of the film. Then, to have it made by someone as aesthetic as Ranjith, with his deep thoughts and revolutionary ideas, was very thought-provoking, and I felt I had to do it,” he explained.
He further added that he couldn’t resist the film after hearing what Pa Ranjith envisioned for Thangalaan. “As an actor, I felt there were so many things I could explore with this character, so many ways I could discover him. It was never just a film for me; it was a journey to figure out the Thangalaan part of me,” he shared. Vikram also opened up about how excited he was and how he had no second thoughts before agreeing to the project. “I got very excited. I would have been very disappointed if he had offered me a regular commercial film. I would have said, ‘Ranjith, come on, give me a break!’ But he just presented this idea, and I immediately said yes. It wasn’t like we thought of anything else. He didn’t say, ‘Let’s do something different or difficult.’ He just presented this, and I said, ‘Let’s do it,’” he concluded.
