Chamari Athapaththu dismissal frustrating, turning point in RCB loss: Jon Lewis

UP Warriorz head coach Jon Lewis didn’t mince his words when it came to the frustrating Chamari Athapaththu dismissal during the loss to RCB on March 4 in Benagluru.

The Warriorz ended up on the wrong side of the match by 23 runs. However, the major talking point was the dismissal of the Sri Lankan all-rounder. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Lewis claimed that the delivery was rotating like a leg-spinner.

The Warriorz coach called it a fascinating dismissal and a massive turning point in the game.

“You watch the ball with the naked eye, and you think it might pitch in line, just maybe,” Lewis said after the game. “Then you look at the ball rotating, and well, it’s rotating like a legspinner. There are not many legspinners that go towards that [other] side. It was a fascinating dismissal and a massive turning point for us in that game.”

We are pretty frustrated about it: Lewis on Athapaththu dismissal

The UP Warriorz coach also said that it was incredibly frustrating to lose Athapaththu in that fashion as the left-right combo of her and skipper Alyssa Healy was making things difficult for RCB. Lewis went on to say that it was an interesting passage of play and they’re still unhappy with the call.

“Chamari is an amazing player and you saw how difficult it was when a left-hander and a right-hander were batting together, of the quality of Smriti [Mandhana] and Ellyse Perry. And they are able to access the short side of the ground. That was one of the reasons why we picked Chamari, to be able to access the short side of the ground for both the right and the left-hander. So to lose her in that way was incredibly frustrating.”

“I don’t know the ins and outs of hawk-eye and the technology and how it works. But it was certainly an interesting passage of play, and something that we are pretty frustrated about,” said Lewis.

What is the controversy surrounding Athapaththu’s dismissal?

During the run-chase by the Warriorz on Monday, controversy erupted when the Sri Lankan all-rounder was struck on the pads after missing a sweep shot off Georgia Wareham’s tossed-up ball. RCB went on to review the call after the umpire had adjudged it not out.

The ball was pitching in line and it was clearly shown that it was a leg-spinner from Wareham. However, ball tracking showed it as a googly and going on to hit the stumps. Healy, who was at the non-striker’s end, was left stunned by what had happened.

The win helped RCB move into the 3rd spot, leapfrogging the Warriorz.
