Amid the standoff between the protesting farmers and the government, Nihang Sikh warriors have joined the protest, extending support to farmers facing off with security forces.

Farmers Protest

The protest began earlier this month with farmers began marching to Delhi on foot demanding higher prices for their crops.

The farmers’ ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, however, was stopped by the police around 200 km from the national capital. Since then, negotiations between the government and the protesting farmers have been going on.

On Wednesday, however, the farmers said they would halt the protest for two days after one of the demonstrators died at the protest site. A 21-year-old farmer from Punjab, Shubhkaran Singh, died in the clashes amid the protest at Khanauri on the Punjab-Haryana Border on Wednesday.

Following Singh’s death, farmer leaders decided to put a two-day stay on their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march.

Reacting to the 21-year-old farmer’s death, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said, “The news of the death of 21-year-old Shubhakaran was received today during the incident at Khanuri border… It is very sad that the youth of my state is no longer in this world… I want to ask the central government… That the farmer of Punjab cannot go to the capital of his own country?”

While waiting for the protest to resume, the Nihang warriors were spotted honing their skills by practising fencing, horseback riding and meditating.

“Guru Gobind Singh has preached that Sikhs must always be ready to fight injustice and oppression. We have to be prepared if these protesters face any trouble even in the middle of the night,” said Sher Singh, one of the Nihangs referring to the spiritual leader of the Sikhs, a Reuters report stated.

“Farmers are being oppressed…The government must not think that they can scare the farmers away…this is Punjab and we are standing in solidarity with the farmers,” another Nihang, Raja Ram Singh said.
