Earning an MBBS degree and stepping closer to becoming a doctor is a watershed moment in the lives of medical students. However, unfortunately, the joy of earning an MBBS degree soon turned into pain for a 21-year-old medical student and his family. Barely a few hours after holding that must-awaited degree, the medical student died after he was bitten by a snake after his convocation ceremony in Bengaluru, Times of India reported.

The tragic incident occurred at the Sri Siddhartha Medical College (SSMC) campus, situated on the outskirts of Tumkur, 80km from Bengaluru. The deceased identified as Adit Balakrishnan was a native of Thrissur in Kerala. Moreover, he was a student of Sri Siddhartha Academy of Higher Education.

As per a report by the Times Of India (TOI), a Tumkur police officer said, “The student was bitten by the venomous snake around 11 PM near a parking space close to his room while he was returning from the convocation. He was accompanied by his mother and other relatives at the time of the incident, unaware that he had been bitten by the snake. However, upon reaching home, he is said to have collapsed and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead.”

Even though the deceased body had marks of snakebite, an autopsy report revealed that Adit’s blood samples had a high level of venom, confirming the snakebite. Adit’s life was tragically cut short by the tragedy, despite being awarded with an MBBS degree during the convocation attended by dignitaries such as Congress parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor and SAHE chancellor and home minister G Parameshwara.

Adit’s death left shockwaves throughout the entire family. His mother and relatives, who had come from Thrissur to participate in the convocation, were devastated upon receiving the news. College sources informed TOI that the grieving family is now waiting for Adit’s father to arrive from Italy for the final rites.

Expressing condolences, the SSMC vice principal, Dr Prabhakara GN, was wuoted by TOI, “Adit was a commendable student, and his tragic death is shocking. It is unfortunate that he could not reach the hospital on time. We held a condolence meeting at the college on Thursday to pay our tributes.”
