The Karnataka board exams for classes 5, 8, and 9 have been deferred. This decision comes after the Supreme Court set aside the Karnataka High Court’s order allowing the state government to conduct the exams, reported Live Law. It is to be noted that the state govt has already commenced the classes 5, 8, and 9 board exams. The top court has now set aside the order and referred the case to a division bench.

The Karnataka HC had earlier permitted the state government to conduct board exams for classes 5, 8, and 9. The state government had thereafter issued an order to conduct the board examination for the 5th, 8th, and 9th class students from March 11 onwards. The exams were slated to conclude on March 18. Meanwhile, the board exams for class 11 have already been conducted, the apex court noted.

The association of unaided schools had approached the Karnataka HC challenging the order of the government. A single-member bench, which had heard the petition, stayed the government’s order. The government filed its appeal after this order. In its appeal, the government submitted that this injunction hampered the examination scheduled to be held earlier. However, after hearing the arguments, the court stayed the order of the single-member bench.

For classes 10 and 12, the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) has released the schedule. The board has commenced the second PU exams and it will conclude on March 22, 2024. The SSLC examination will be administered between March 25, 2024, and April 6, 2024.

Over 6.9 lakh candidates registered for the second pre-university (PU) exam this year and about 8.9 lakh students registered for Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exams, Karnataka School Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa said. The KSEAB has selected 1,124 examination centres across the state for the second PU exam and 2,747 centres for the SSLC examination.
