Chandrashekhar Azad’s condition ‘stable’, appeals for peace in video message from hospital

Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad Ravan’s condition is stable after being shot at by unidentified assailants in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district, police said on Wednesday. Admitted to a local hospital after one of two bullets fired grazed his abdomen, Azad was accompanied by four others, including his younger brother, in a car when the incident happened.

Superintendent of Police (City) Abhimanyu Manglik told news agency ANI that he had met and spoke with Azad, who is feeling better now. He added that police are on the lookout for the accused and an investigation is underway.

“I had a word with his doctor also, and he told me that Azad’s vitals are stable…he will be discharged tomorrow after check-up…probe is on, the accused behind the attack will be arrested soon.”

In a video statement, the Azad Samaj Party chief asked his supporters to maintain peace. “I did not expect such a sudden attack. We will continue our fight constitutionally…” he said from the hospital.

The 36-year-old Dalit leader was on his way back from a ‘terhavin’ ritual at a supporter’s home in Deoband when the assailants fired “four shots” at his SUV at around 5 pm near Union Circle.

“The crime scene has been examined by a forensic team. The assailants are said to be four or five in number,” said the Senior Superintendent of Police of Saharanpur Vipin Tada.

According to police, the vehicle used by the assailants carried a Haryana registration number. “The borders of the district have been sealed and a massive operation to track the assailant and their vehicle has been launched,” said Manglik.

The officer added that the Saharanpur Police has also reached out to their counterparts in adjoining districts to seek support in hunting down the attackers.

Hundreds of Bhim Army and Azad Samaj Party supporters gathered at the hospital demanding Z security for him even as the police deployed additional force to avoid any untoward situation.
