BJP President JP Nadda Resigns From Rajya Sabha As Himachal MP; To Represent Gujarat Now


BJP president JP Nadda today resigned as a Member of Parliament of Rajya Sabha. His resignation has been accepted as well. On 27 February, JP Nadda was elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha from Gujarat. His resignation came after Harsh Mahajan was elected to Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh defeating Congress candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

“Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, an elected Member of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha), representing the State of Himachal Pradesh, resigned his seat in the Rajya Sabha and his resignation has been accepted by the Chairman, Rajya Sabha w.e.f. 4th March, 2024,” said Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Mody.

Originally hailing from Himachal Pradesh, JP Nadda was born on 2 December 1960 in Patna, Bihar. Having earned his BA degree from Patna University, he pursued LL.B at Himachal Pradesh University. During his youth, he actively engaged in several movements led by Jai Prakash Narayan. He had affiliations with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and attained the position of National Secretary in 1989. Subsequently, in 1991, he assumed the role of President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha.

In 1993, he was elected as MLA in Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly for the first time and was elected Leader of Opposition. He was re-elected in 1998 and became the Health Minister in the BJP State Government. In 2010, he was made the National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was elected as a Rajya Sabha member in 2012 for the first time. In 2012, Nadda got elected to Rajya Sabha for the first time. He took command of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, from 2014-2019. In June 2019, He was elected the National Working President of the Bharatiya Janata Party and in January 2020, the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
