Breaking the stronghold of Congress, Ram Kumar Toppo achieved what was once deemed impossible, with BJP candidates traditionally facing defeat by substantial margins in Sitapur

From being a commando to now an MLA, Ram Kumar Toppo’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Once a prime poster commando in the highly decorated Central Reserve Police Force’s (CRPF) Valley Quick Action Team (QAT), Toppo’s valour earned him a gallantry medal. He was an important asset of 55 Battalion of CRPF.

In the political battleground, Toppo, who was fighting the Chhattisgarh assembly elections on a BJP ticket from Sitapur constituency, defeated Congress’ sitting minister Amarjeet Bhagat by a margin of 17,160 votes on Sunday.

Toppo’s triumph holds more significance as he not only secured a victory for himself but also delivered the first-ever win for the BJP in the Sitapur seat. Breaking the stronghold of the Congress, Toppo achieved what was once deemed impossible, with BJP candidates traditionally facing defeat by substantial margins.

Toppo’s story transcends mere political statistics; it’s a narrative of resilience, transition, and the unwavering spirit of a gallantry medal winner-turned-political pioneer. His journey resonates with those who aspire to follow in his footsteps, turning military discipline into political leadership.

‘People were Unhappy with Congress’

Toppo, who not only defeated a candidate but also wiped off Congress’ domination from Sitapur, told News18 till 2021, he was clicked as a CRPF poster commando, and he never thought he would change his way so soon. What exactly triggered him to change his life started with a campaign by locals.

“Here (Sitapur) people were unhappy with Congress. They thought we should have our own candidate. Few contacted me but I refused. Later, I got at least 15,000 letters, which actually forced me to think. From there, I changed my mind and decided to join politics,” Toppo said.

“After serving for four years, I decided last year to switch and join politics. I don’t know about my future but there (in CRPF) also i was serving the nation and here too I will serve the nation.”
