The Assam Government has officially given the nod to the merger of the Board of Secondary Education (SEBA) and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC). Following a decisive decision made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the state is now set to establish a singular entity overseeing the realms of both Class 10 and Class 12 education boards in Assam.

The resolution to amalgamate the Assam state boards for Classes 10 and 12 marks a significant step towards educational reform. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, sharing insights with X, expressed that the merger of SEBA and AHSEC aims to “develop, regulate, and supervise the standards and quality of School Education” in the region.

As outlined in the official statement, the consolidation of SEBA and AHSEC will culminate in the creation of the Assam State School Education Board, aptly abbreviated as ASSEB. This strategic move seeks to streamline and enhance the overall efficiency of the education system in the state.

Traditionally, Assam’s Class 10 and Class 12 boards have operated independently. SEBA, responsible for organising and conducting the Class 10 Board Exams, functioned separately from AHSEC, which oversaw the administration of Class 11 and Class 12 exams, colloquially known as the Assam HS Exams.

This cabinet decision comes on the heels of nearly eight months since the conclusion of the Assam Class 10 and Class 12 board exams. The move to merge SEBA and AHSEC underscores a commitment to fostering a more cohesive and comprehensive educational framework in the state.

In addition to the historic merger, the state government has given its approval for specific amendments to the recruitment process for school teachers across various levels. This strategic initiative is designed to maintain an optimal student-teacher ratio and ensure the “optimum utilisation of manpower” within state-run schools. The overarching goal is to fortify the educational landscape and elevate the overall learning experience for students across Assam.
